New Distribution Capability (NDC) Corporate Travel Glossary

Navigating the technical terms associated with NDC can be challenging. This glossary is here to help you understand the jargon tied to the airline industry’s innovative data exchange technology.

Ancillary Services

Airlines offer additional perks and services, such as seat selection, priority boarding, and checked baggage. NDC's goal is to simplify the process for airlines to sell these extras on their websites and through platforms like ORX Travel.

API (Application Programming Interface)

APIs allow different computer programs to communicate with each other. They're crucial for airlines, travel platforms like ORX Travel, and other partners to exchange real-time data and offer personalized travel options – a core objective of NDC.

Direct Channel

This is when airlines offer their products and services directly to travelers via their websites and apps.

Dynamic Pricing

A strategy used by airlines to adjust fares in real-time based on various factors. With NDC APIs, airlines can share real-time data with platforms like ORX Travel, essential for on-the-fly price modifications.

EDIFACT

A computer language used by travel suppliers and GDSs to deliver travel content. Its limitations in transferring rich content can restrict airlines in selling and promoting their offerings.

GDS (Global Distribution System)

A computerized network that platforms like ORX Travel use to access and book various travel-related services, including airline reservations, hotel bookings, and car rentals.

IATA (International Air Transport Association)

The organization behind the launch of NDC, aiming to enhance how airline content is distributed.

Indirect Channels

When airlines use alternative distribution methods, such as GDSs, to sell their offerings. These intermediaries connect to airlines’ NDC APIs to display offers, fares, and ancillary services.

MMP (Minimum Marketable Product)

A framework that outlines the capabilities required to make NDC beneficial for business travel.

NDC (New Distribution Capability)

An IATA initiative that uses XML data exchange technology to enhance how airlines market and sell their products. It allows airlines to provide relevant offers to customers, regardless of the distribution channel, making platforms like ORX Travel even more efficient.

Offer and Order Management Processes

This involves tailoring offers to each traveler's preferences (offer management) and ensuring effective management of bookings and transactions (order management). With NDC, these processes have become more advanced.

Rich Content

Detailed visual information that airlines can provide to platforms like ORX Travel to promote their offerings. This can include videos, images, seat maps, and more, enhancing the ticket purchasing experience.

XML (Extensible Markup Language)

A data exchange language that supports rich content and retail sales. NDC uses XML to improve how airlines promote and sell their products, and platforms like ORX Travel benefit from this enhanced content.
